Punch and Judy puppet: the beadle
A glove puppet representing the beadle, part of Punch and Judy set belonging to puppeteer Peter Butchard (1909-2009). The puppet has a wooden head, hands, legs and feet (the left foot is missing). The face is carved, with a snub nose and red painted cheeks and chin. The figure wears black breeches, coat and tricorn hat in woollen fabric, which has been machine sewn. The waistcoat is in white cotton with an stand up collar. Braid trim decorates the breeches, cuffs edge and collar of the coat and the hat which has a cross on the front. A plastic curtain ring is sewn to the back of the figure to hang it up.
