House flag, Leif Hoegh & Co.
The house flag of Hoegh, Leif, & Co. A/S, Oslo. A white rectangular flag bearing a blue letter 'H'. The flag is made of cotton fabric and is machine sewn. A rope and clip are attached.
Leif Hoegh and Company was founded in 1927 by Leif Hoegh, a Norwegian economist and entrepreneur who was interested in the growing oil business. By 1939, Leif Hoegh and Company managed a line of 13 tankers. In 1948 the company began running liners with the Java Pacific line. The company began diversifying its ships in the 1960s, and managed combined oil/bulk/ore carriers (OBO) and car/bulk carriers. In 1970, Hoegh and the shipping company Ugland began a joint venture in the auto liner business. Hoegh fully owned Ugland by 2000. In 1973, Hoegh contracted the first liquid natural gas (LNG) carrier with special tanks called Moss tanks, which are spherical in shape and protrude above a ship’s hull. In 2000, the company decided to focus on LNG and auto carriers, and sold its fleet of liners and open hatch operators (for forest goods). Leif Hoegh and Company currently runs about 50 Pure Car Truck Carriers (PCTCs) and six LNG carriers.
