Pattern 1858
Naval rifle. The stock is possibly made of walnut with a brass butt plate, brass fore-end cap and broad brass trigger guard. Two sling loops are fitted. A slot is cut from the fore-end cap to the lower band to take a ramrod. The ramrod is steel with a cup shaped head. The lock is a sidelock percussion. The whole of the lock is missing. The barrel is of circular, external section, and rifled with five grooves. Foresight and rearsight graduated to 900 yards. The calibre is 0.577in. Inscribed on the barrel is a crown over 'TP' over an arrow, Government proof marks for Birimingham and London made weapons from circa 1838 until 1868. Inscribed on the butt is '8A' over '63 MA 1382 (Museum of Artillery) PIMLICO 1862'. Also inscribed on the lockplate is the name 'CHAPMAN'.
