1675
A deck watch numbered 1675, by Leonard Hall. It has a well-finished jewelled movement with the regulator scale marked ‘SLOW FAST’. The balance cock is finely engraved with a foliage design. The plate is inscribed ‘Leonard Hall LOUTH’, ‘No. 1675.’ and the broad arrow. There is a lever escapement and a two-arm compensation balance. The movement is housed in an open-face silver case with a snap-fit jointed back and dome. The back is inscribed on the outside ‘H.S.2’ and the broad arrow. The inside has a silver hallmark and the initials ‘JW’. The dome is marked on the inside similarly. A winding crown is at the 12 o'clock position with a hand-set push-button at the one o'clock position.
A White enamel dial has Roman hour numerals. There is a subsidiary seconds dial in the lower-half marked with Arabic ten-second figures. The dial is inscribed ‘1675’.
The movement sits in a circular brass canister lined inside with blue velvet on the bottom. A brass bezel with bevelled glass screws down to secure the watch and protect the dial. The canister is screwed into a wooden deck box with a hinged lid opening 180°. The box has a flip-catch to lock it. The box lid includes a brass label-holder containing a card label printed ‘Issued from / Royal Observatory, Greenwich. / 3 AUG 1923’. The lid also includes a screwed-on circular tablet inscribed ‘L. HALL / 1675’ and the broad arrow. The underside of the box is covered in green baize.
This sort of high-grade watch was used by the British Admiralty in the 20th century on smaller ships for navigation, in lieu of a marine chronometer.
