House flag, Hindustan Steam Shipping Co. Ltd
The house flag of the Hindustan Steam Shipping Co. Ltd, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. A rectangular flag quartered in blue, yellow, white and red. The flag is made of a wool and synthetic fibre bunting. It has a cotton hoist and is machine sewn. A rope and toggle are attached.
J.W.Squance & Co formed the company in 1893. The company name was changed to Common Brothers Ltd in 1906 following the retirement of Captain Squance. The Hindustan Steam Shipping Company Ltd was the company’s main shipping arm until they ceased to operate as ship owners in the late 1970s. On 8 August 1978 Hindustan was renamed as Amokura.
