Tusk section
This tusk section was captured from Nana at Benin, in 1894. Nana Olomu (1852-1916) was a powerful African trader who tried to contain British influence and interests in the Niger Delta. He was made ‘Governor of the River’ by the British in 1884 but continued to resist their attempts to extract greater trading concessions. On the pretext of his involvement in slave trading, a British naval and military force was sent to depose Nana in 1894. He was stripped of his wealth and died in exile.
