Sketch of the South-Coast of Africa

A sketch map of the South-West African coast, from Cape Lopez (Gabon) through Cape Padrao (Congo River mouth, DRC), Ambriz (Angola), Novo Redondo (Angola) to Lobito Bay (Angola). The remarks and annotations on this map give nautical, geographic and provisioning information, with the exception of a note written near Cape Padaroa (Padrao), marked by crosses: 'About a mile to the southward of Cape Padaroa where the crosses are is a small inlet where they ship their slaves without going up the river. A vessel can lay to snug - hull be the trees - that a vessel going close round Cape Padaroa may not see her at our case in the Grappler for we towed part out the river without seeing her, but as we came out of the river in the morning she was described from the mast head. Sweeping out we took her - a Brigantine called Sapphira - with 479 slaves in.' Part of the Michael Graham-Stewart slavery collection.
