Portrait of a servant
Portrait of a servant, from a sketchbook from the family of William Beckford. Presumably the W.B. of Fonthill fame (1759-1844) who inherited one million pounds and a hundred thousand pounds a year from his father, also called William. This prodigious wealth came from their Jamaican possessions. Another W.B. (d. 1799) also spent 13 years in Jamaica (about which he published two books) before returning to Suffolk. Part of the Michael Graham-Stewart slavery collection.
