Sebehr Pasha, The Slave King

Page taken from J. W. Buel's 'Heroes of the Dark Continent' (1889), a book with 500 wood-engraved illustrations, by several hands, plus colour-printed plates, published in America in 1889 by James William Buel. On the reverse is an image titled 'Gordon Seeking Friendship with the Natives'.

James William Buel (1849-1920) published his Heroes of the Dark Continent, and how Stanley found Emin Pasha in various editions across North America in 1889-90. The book, which deals with European exploration of Africa, has over 500 line illustrations, many of them quite shockingly graphic depictions of the appalling brutality of the East and Central African slave trade.
