Starving Slaves Abandoned on the March
Written in pencil on the reverse is the inscription: 'The History of Southern & Central Africa its Topography Geography, natural productions/3 volumes/London/Adams & Col/Paternoster Row'. Part of the Michael Graham-Stewart slavery collection.
‘The History of Southern Africa and Central Africa’ by Charles H. Calvert was published in London in 1877. It drew upon the new information on the region emerging as a result of the expeditions of Grant, Speke and other European explorers. Such publications reflected the considerable public interest in African geography and peoples sparked by the exploration of the ‘dark continent’.
