Anti-slavery medal
Anti-slavery medal. Obverse: Enchained slave kneeling. Legend: ‘AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER?’ Reverse with the inscription: ‘WHATSOEVER YE WOULD THAT MEN SHOULD DO UNTO YOU, DO YE EVEN SO TO THEM.’
This medal shows an enchained slave kneeling, with the inscription ‘Am I not a Man and a Brother?’. Images and inscriptions such as these, with their appeal to the sympathy of the viewer, were common devices circulated by abolitionists in Britain to further the campaign. Medals such as this would have been distributed at meetings or sold, with the proceeds going to fund the abolitionist campaign.
