The battle of Obligado at the commencement of firing on the enemy by the Anglo-French Division

This framed coloured lithograph depicts the start of the battle of Vuelta de Obligado in the Parana River on 20th November 1845, between the Argentine Confederation and a fleet of the Anglo-French Division. The French inscription relates that the enemy commenced firing at 9.50am, followed immediately by the allied division. By late afternoon, despite constant bombardment by the Argentines, the land battalions were evacuated. Monsieur Trehouart led the French Division, which comprised the San Martin, Pandour, Procida and steamboat Fulton. Captain Hotham commanded the English fleet of Comus, Fanny, Philomel, Dolphin, and the steamboats Gorgon and Firebrand. ‘Gorgon’ is shown in the centre right of the picture. Inscribed in French.
