The Earl of St Vincent
A full-length portrait of John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent (1752–1820), in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1795–1812, with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath, holding his hat in his right hand and gesturing with his left hand to a fleet at sea in the background. He stands on a rocky seashore. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘The Earl of St Vincent’, and with the production details and publication line: ‘Painted by Gabriel Stuart. / Engraved by J.R. Smith Mezzotinto engraver to His Royal Highss. the Prince of Wales. / London. Published Sept. 5 1797 by I. R. Smith King Street, Covent Garden.’ This portrait was engraved by John Raphael Smith after a half-length oil painting by Gilbert Stuart (mistakenly called ‘Gabriel Stuart’ in the print caption), which showed the sitter in pre-1795 uniform, as previously engraved by Robert Laurie (see PAG6496). Here, Smith has extended the portrait to full-length and updated the uniform to the 1795 pattern. The print was published by Smith on 5 September 1797. (Updated June 2019.)
