'Mawson Antarctic Expedition 1929' [in] 'Discovery'
Lightweight white 78 r.p.m. gramophone record. Inscribed 'Presented to the MAWSON ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION 1929 by the GOODSON GRAMOPHONE RECORD COMPANY LTD. LONDON, ENGLAND. Patented in all Countries British Patent Nos. 271796, 293667, 247429'. A picture of the research vessel 'Discovery' in the centre. A tenor aria, 'Una vergine un angiol di dio', from Donizetti's 'La Favorita' is on one side and military music on the other. The singer of the aria is Amilcare Pozzoli, who was 'comprimario' or second tenor in the opera house at Cremona about this time: few recordings of his are known, though another by him of 'Ecco ridente in cielo' from Rossini's 'Barber of Seville' on a similar promotional disc for Boots, the chemists, was found while researching this one.
