Astronomical Cards, in Question and Answer
This set of 56 cards consists of four question cards and 52 answer cards, all contained within a case. The cover of the case has a picture of a planetarium, entitled "The Solar System", and text that reads: "Astronomical Cards, in question and answer, complied from the best Authorities; principally from Keith's invaluable treatise on the Globes; and particularly adapted to interest and assist the youthful student in the sublime science of Astronomy". The text referred to is Thomas Keith's, 'A new treatise on the use of the globes, or a philosophical view of the earth and heavens' (first edition 1805).
The questions on the cards include "What is the meaning of the word Astronomy, and what does the science teach?'; 'Have the distances of any of the fixed stars been ascertained?', 'Can any rule be given for finding the Polar Star?', 'Has the sun any motion?'. This replicates the kind of learning children undertook at home or in school in the early 19th century: memorising and repeating texts in response to the teacher's prompt.
