Automatic Temperature Control System
Automatic Temperature Control System. Two electric coils with wires attached to a horizontal elongated glass vessel containing liquid mercury supported by two copper cylinders. Housed in a wooden box with a glazed viewing window on one side.
Possibly used within the Magnetic Department of the Royal Observatory at Abinger, Surrey, alongside thermostats AST1042 and AST1043.
Alternatively, it may be the Grundy automatic switch that was installed in April 1920 to regulate the chronometer testing ovens (Report of the Astronomer Royal to the Board of Visitors, 1920, p.4).
