Component model; Lower yard

Scale 1:xx. A model of a temporary lower yard made entirely of wood with metal fittings and rope lashings. The main body of the yard consists of two flat pieces of timber rectangular in section which taper out at their extreme ends. These two large timbers overlap in the middle and are further reinforced by a smaller timber which is semi-circular in section and is painted black. .Lashed to the main body of the yard are two sets of capstan bars, six in total, five studding sail booms all of which are held in place by twenty-four equally spaced rope lashings. In the middle section of the yard there are four flat planks which would have been used for the cross trees and are held in place by two rope lashings further tightened by two wooden wedges. A series of twenty-six metal eyes have been screwed into the main body of the yard to which the main sail could be bent on. At the extreme ends of the yards on the upper face are two small rectangular sheaves slightly at an angle to the midline of the yard. The model has been stained and varnished in natural wood and painted black in two sections.
