Stereoscopic view of slave market Zanzibar, 1860
Sterescopic non-matt salted paper print. Part of the Michael Graham-Stewart slavery collection. This and ZBA2602 came from James Grant's family album, since disbound, that contained the first photographs ever taken in this area of east Africa. Grant brought photographic apparatus for his expedition with Speke into the interior but found it too cumbersome, leaving the equipment at the coast after having taken a few images. There appear to be only two copies of these photographs in existence; Grant sent the other to the Royal Geographical Society. On the trip he painted a series of watercolur drawings. (Illustrated in 'James Augustus Grant in Africa 1860-63', National Library of Scotland, 1982).
