'Cargo of Newly released Slaves on board H.M.S. London'
Albumen print. Part of the Michael Graham-Stewart slavery collection
Mounted with ZBA2616
This object was used as part of the ‘Hidden Histories’ project (2019-21) run by Sussex University and Dar es Salaam Centre for Architectural Heritage. The project examined lost coastal skills and craft traditions in present-day Tanzania. Participants from the port town of Tanga were shown images of this and other RMG objects and asked to reflect on the legacies of British colonialism in Tanzania. Their responses, which included shocked silences and discussions about slavery, were recorded via oral history interviews (currently available via the 'Rising from the Depths' website, hosted by the University of Edinburgh).
