Dish
Small circular bone china dish with lid, made for Sir George Nares' Arctic Expedition of 1875. White glazed and transfer-printed in black with an elaborate rope border and the badge of the expedition - a polar bear within a garter (on both lid and base). The garter is inscribed 'ARCTIC EXPEDITION 1875'. The lid has a loop handle moulded with flower leaf terminals picked out in black. On the base and lid is printed 'DISCOVERY' ('HMS Discovery' 1874 was one of the expedition's two vessels). An anchor, also printed on the base and underside of the lid, is inscribed 'ARCTIC EXPEDITION 1875', 'W.T.COPELAND AND SONS'. The maker's name is also printed in green on the base and lid.
