House flag, Humber Line
The house flag of the Humber Line.
A dark blue rectangular flag with a white disc in the centre bearing the letters 'AHL' in red. The flag is made of a wool and synthetic fibre bunting. It has a cotton hoist and is machine sewn. A rope and toggle are attached.
The Associated Humber Line (AHL) was formed in 1935 to manage five rail and shipping companies: Goole Steam Shipping Company, Hull & Netherlands Steam Ship Company, London & North Eastern Railway (Great Central section), London Midland & Scottish Railway (Goole services) and Wilson's & NER Shipping Company (Wilson Line). The Goole Steam Shipping Company was founded in 1894 and operated small passenger and cargo services from Goole, Hull and Grimsby to various European ports. Its ownership was eventually passed to the London Midland and Scottish Railway in 1922. The Hull & Netherlands Steam Ship Company was founded in 1894 and ran services between Hull and the Netherlands, and in 1923 became part of the London and North Eastern Railway. The Wilson Line was founded in 1822 as an importer of iron ore from Sweden to Hull. The Wilson and North Eastern Railway Shipping Company was formed in 1906 and operated services between Humber ports to Hamburg, Antwerp, Ghent and Dunkirk. The Wilson Line was bought by Ellerman in 1916. In 1948 the nationalisation of railways took place in Great Britain, and the AHL became part of the Road Haulage Executive, and managed many ships in this fleet. In 1962 the British Transport Commission was abolished and AHL became part of the Transport Holding Company, then later part of the National Freight Corporation. In 1971, the National Freight Corporation was sold to the Atlantic Steam Navigation Company, and in this year AHL’s operations ceased, however their management activities continued into the next decade.
