Knife sheath

A knife sheath made of caribou skin with a birch bark stiffener and a cotton tape suspension strap. It fits a knife similar to AAA2635.

The list of material associated with Admiral Sir George Back (1796-1878) in the draft 1913 Royal Naval Museum Catalogue, mentions two knife sheaths with associated knives, this one is a spare. It may be the item mentioned as being in Case 4, No. 1 'A pair of Indian moccasins and a knife sheath for a knife from British North America used by Sir John Franklin in his land journeys'. These items were presented by Miss Sophia Cracroft in 1892.

John Franklin made two overland journeys to the Arctic Ocean in 1819-22 and 1825-27, travelling north via trading posts in the subarctic region. This item may be Cree in origin.
