Grass ring

A grass ring with an attached label: 'This Indian grass was platted by Her Majesty The Queen of the Huron tribe in Lower Canada & presented to J. Nelson at the Palas Royal Lauret - near Quebec Augt 3rd 1827'. The Huron-Wendat supplemented their income as farmers with the sale of handicrafts to tourists, particularly birchbark and moosehair embroidery.

Charles MacKay, visiting the area in 1859 met the Queen of the Hurons - the great aunt of Paul, the current chief. See 'Life and Liberty in America' (London, 1859).
