Clock
An ebony veneered quarter repeating spring clock with alarm by Richard Colston, London, circa 1690
The twin fuse movement has verge escapement and quarter repeating on three bells. The backplate is decorated with fine foliate engraving and bears the makers name within an oval cartouche to the lower centre. The dial is typical of the period with a matted centre, signed silvered chapter ring and winged cherub spandrels. The case has an oak carcass, which is veneered in ebonised fruitwood and adorned by gilt brass mounts and ball finials.
Richard Colston’s father was also a clockmaker; he became a freeman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers by patronage.
