Engraving of the Paris Observatory, which was founded in 1667. The instruments being used in the foreground include an astronomical quadrant with a telescopic sight (on the left) and a large telescope with a mast and pulley for raising it. More telescopes can also be seen in use on the roof of the observatory itself. The image was first printed in 'La galérie agréable du monde', a 66-volume work first published in 1729.
