An Astronomer with Astrolabe and a Telescope

A print after a French 13th century manuscript (now in the Bodelian Library, Oxford). Despite the title given, the man is actually holding a sighting tube rather than a telescope. By the 4th century BC, sighting tubes were known to be of use in observing the stars and planets, since they helped to eliminate extraneous light.
