Breaking Wave
This close study of an unpopultated shoreline, with the horizon placed high on the page, is typical of Amies's sea pieces. The artist also produced larger oil paintings on the same theme, for which this may be a study. Another example of the artists work in oil is Seascape, Gorleston, Norfolk (BHC4149) in which the loose and heavy pencil work evident in this drawing translates into an impastoed, pointilist technique.
