The Attack of two Lanoon Pirate Proas on the Proa 'Jolly Batchelor'

A lithograph depicting the attack of two indigenous pirate proas (right) on the crew of HMS Dido off the coast of Borneo in the background on 21 May 1843; the latter are manning the proa Jolly Batchelor (left), belonging to the first White Rajah of Sarawak and celebrated European pirate-hunter of the time, James Brooke, and the Red Ensign can be seen at the stern. Cannon fire is present on both sides. The British crew can be seen firing rifles. The indigenous coastal pirates, referred to by many names (e.g., Moro pirates, Malay pirates, Maguindanao pirates, ‘Sea Dyaks’), can be seen holding spears or lances. The background is filled with a forest of trees and hills, and the foreground features small rocky outcrops emerging from the still waters.
