24pdr howitzer
One of a pair of brass muzzleloading smoothbore howitzers mounted on wooden rear-chock carriages. Calibre: 5.75in. On the right trunnion is 'R10 CCCLX', on the left trunnion is '1859' and on the barrel is the cypher of Queen Victoria. Ships of the First, Second and Third Rates carried howitzers for use in their boats, firing explosive shells at a high angle. They were also among the armament of gunboats in the Crimean War, 1854-5.
