Pistol
One of a pair of cannonbarrel flintlock pocket pistols attributed to Admiral Lord Nelson 1758-1805. The stock is of walnut, half stocked with a plain wooden butt and a square silver escutcheon set into a plain wooden square. There is a folding trigger. The locks are flintlock mounted centrally with broad hinged pan covers. The barrels are of steel, smoothbore which are made to unscrew. The calibre is 0.5in. The pistols are inscribed on escutcheon 'HORATIO NELSON'; on the barrel of one pistol the figure '1' and on both pistols are proofmarks. The lock is inscribed 'TAUNTON GOLSWORTHY' (incorrect spelling). The attribution to Nelson must be false as the proof marks date from 1813.
