Weapon
Sharktooth weapon (teeth missing). Reputedly Fijian. It belonged to Captain William Tolley Brookes (1791-1874). See JOD/61 Journal of voyage to South Seas in 'Recovery' 1828-31, 'Matilda' 1832-36, also JOD/59 journal in 'Active' whaler 1838-42. These weapons were made in the Gilbert Islands. Brookes visited the Kingsmill Islands (as the Gilbert Islands were then known) several times in the course of these voyages. Similar examples in our collections are associated with Tuvalu. Today both island groups form part of the Republic of Kiribati.
