Tabua

Tabua - a whales tooth on a braided coir rope. It was presented to Lady Maxwell-Anderson at Mbua, Fiji, in 1934 by the Vunivalu (senior chieftain of Kubuna and Bau), Ratu Popi Seniloli, the grandson of the king who ceded Fiji to Great Britain. Lady Maxwell-Anderson was the wife of Captain Maxwell Maxwell-Anderson RN, Chief Justice of Fiji 1929-36. Tabua were highly prized ceremonial objects, originally made of wood, later of whale's teeth - a bi-product of the Pacific whaling industry. The tabua was later presented to HMS 'Fiji' by Lady Maxwell-Anderson.
