Model harpoon

A model harpoon inscribed in ink on the wooden shaft: 'LAKE HARBOUR, BAFFIN LAND, SEPTEMBER 1937, HMS SCARBOROUGH'. HMS 'Scarborough' was cruising in Hudson Bay in 1937. This type of item was made for sale to crews of passing ships. Lake Harbour is now known as Kimmirut, Qikiqtaaluk (Baffin Island).

The harpoon has a softwood shaft with an ivory shaft attached to either end. The forshaft ends in a point to take the head, the ivory shaft at the opposite end has a chisel-shaped termination. The ivory head has two spurs so it remains embedded in the quarry. It is attached to the forshaft by a length of hide (probably seal skin) which is looped round a strip of ivory on the forshaft, secured at one end and held down at the other by a ring. The line has two ends, one attached to the harpoon head, the other may have been attached to a float. In the centre of the wooden shaft, a small ivory fitting, shaped like a fish tail is attached by sinew lashing running round the shaft and through a hole in the ivory. It is set into a slot in the wood.
