Sea chest

Pine sea chest used on voyage to Australia in 1875 by William Baddeley Esq (1848-1939). It has dovetailed construction and straight sides, iron bands reinforce the corners and the edge of the lid. The chest has skirting boards and beckets attached with screws for rope handles (now missing). There is provision for a lock, a ring on the front of the lid, and a batten fixed across the back of the chest. A paper label on the end reads: BAGGAGE SOUTHAMPTON SYDNEY.' Painted on the canvas-covered lid: 'W. Baddeley Passenger Sydney.'
