House flag, Ostasiatiske Kompagni A/S Det

The house flag of Ostasiatiske Kompagni A/S Det, Copenhagen. A white flag with a blue anchor placed diagonally and fouled by a chain and the letters 'Ø. K.' below. The flag is made of a wool and synthetic fibre bunting. It has a cotton hoist and is machine sewn. The design is printed. A rope and clip is attached.

The firm began as a trading and liner business set up in Copenhagen in 1897 by Captain H.C. Andersen. Their routes ran between Europe and the Far East. They pioneered the use of ocean going motor ships from 1912 and at about the same time extended their operations to the west coast of the United States and across the Pacific to China. The company began to diversify during the 1930’s. By the 1970’s they were still substantial ship owners but found this side of the business increasingly unprofitable. They are still in business primarily as food producers and distributers.
