Writing case with a wooden hinged lid. Writing surface inside is covered with purple velvet. There is a compartment for pens and ink at the front. In pencil on the back of the writing surface: 'Washed ashore from the wreck of the Barque Great Britain on the Island of St Jago, Dec. 9th 1863'.
