Writing box

Oriental lacquer writing box with a design of the Battle of Camperdown on the lid in and oval Inlaid with mother of pearl, with mother of pearl birds and sprays over the entire box. Black lacquer opens to form a writing slope covered with pink baize. Pen trays and empty compartments along back edge. A drawer in the side with a flush brass handle opens to reveal a fitted tray, also lacquer work with mirror and lidded compartments etc. Inside an envelope is a leather card case, metal links and four pieces of wood. Inscribed below the battle scene: 'Zeeslag, tusschen de Bataafeche en Engelsche vlooten op de hoogte van Edmond den elfdn October 1797.' [Naval battle between the Batavian and English fleets off Edmond on the eleventh of October 1797].
