Shell damage suffered by HMS Warspite at Jutland
A close view from the dockside of the port side of the hull at roughly main deck level, just forward of the mainmast, showing damage suffered by HMS Warspite (1913) on 31 May 1916 during the Battle of Jutland. The hole in the armour plate was caused by the impact of a 12 inch shell which burst in the feed water tank behind. To the right of this hit is a mark made by a 5.9 inch shell which failed to penetrate the armour. For another view of the latter hit see N16498 and for a much closer view of the former hit see N16509. This photograph was taken in No.1 Dry Dock at Rosyth.
