Shell damage suffered by HMS Warspite at Jutland
A view from the dockside of the starboard side just before the 6 inch battery, showing damage suffered by HMS Warspite (1913) on 31 May 1916 during the Battle of Jutland. The hole in the plating at main deck level was caused by the impact of a 12 inch shell which burst in a mess space behind. The workmen are repairing small holes in the upper deck that were caused by the explosion of this shell. For a view of the latter prior to repairs see N16497. This photograph was taken in No.1 Dry Dock at Rosyth.
