Shell damage suffered by HMS Warspite at Jutland
A close view of the port side of the main deck at the junction with the upper deck just aft of 'Y' turret, showing damage suffered by HMS Warspite (1913) on 31 May 1916 during the Battle of Jutland. The hole marks the entry point of a 12 inch shell which then burst on the far side of the ship, causing the blast and splinter damage shown in N16493 and N16499. This photograph was taken in No.1 Dry Dock at Rosyth.
