Shell damage suffered by HMS Warspite at Jutland

A close view of the aft end of the shelter deck, photographed from the port side at upper deck level, showing damage suffered by HMS Warspite (1913) on 31 May 1916 during the Battle of Jutland. The large hole in the centre was caused by a 12 inch shell which penetrated the thin plating and burst against the armoured communication tube to the torpedo control tower. This photograph was taken in No.1 Dry Dock at Rosyth. See N16493 for a view of this area from astern.
