The Grand Fleet in Scapa Flow

A view of some of the battleships and light cruisers of the Grand Fleet in Scapa Flow. In the foreground is the Cambrian class light cruiser HMS Castor (1915). The only other warships that can be positively identified are HMS Canada (1913), the third ship from the left. The other ships in the picture are a member of the Iron Duke class [second from left], all three members of the Bellerophon class [fourth, fifth and sixth ships from left beyond Castor], a member of the St Vincent class [extreme right] and an unidentified light cruiser [extreme left].

This mix of vessels indicates the presence of the 4th Battle Squadron and the 11th Destroyer Flotilla [of which Castor was leader]. A precise date is not possible as this grouping of ships occurred on many occasions during late 1915 and early 1916.
