5th Battle Squadron at sea
A port quarter view of the Queen Elizabeth class battleship HMS Warspite (1913), taken from her sister HMS Queen Elizabeth (1913). The view is from Queen Elizabeth's forward superstructure, looking forward over her forecastle deck. Warspite's 15-inch guns are trained out to starboard indicating that gunnery training is about to take place and the ship has just executed a sharp turn to port, deploying with her squadron mates from line into column. Beyond her having just performed the same evolution is HMS Barham (1914). The small ship in the distance appears to be a destroyer flotilla leader. This image may be part of a sequence taken on the same day, comprising negatives N16629 to N16634 inclusive, and N16640.
