Presentation of Medaille Militaire to Chief Petty Officer Barry
Ceremony for the presentation of the Medaille Militaire to Chief Petty Officer Barry. This photograph was taken on the upper deck of HMS Queen Elizabeth (1913) aft and slightly to port of 'Y' turret mounting, looking across the deck to the starboard side. The barrels of 'Y' turret's guns have been elevated to clear the deck area.
Chief Petty Officer Barry is standing to attention in the centre of the picture while Admiral Sir David Beatty pins the Medaille Militaire to his jacket. The other senior officers have their backs to the camera, and opposite them the ship's Royal Marines have formed a guard of honour and are at the 'order arms'. The Marines' rifles appear to be Lee-Metfords, and have Japanese Type 30 bayonets fixed.
