Sea chest

Sea chest belonging to Lieutenant James Ward (circa 1761-1806) who sailed with Cook on his third voyage. Unlike later sea chests, it has square ends and sits flat on the floor. It is made of stained and polished pine with large iron handles at the ends. The lid is formed of four pieces of timber with the grain running back to front, the edges are reinforced with iron bands.
