Royal coat of arms of King William III
Carved, painted and gilded royal coat of arms of King William III (reg. 1689-1702). The Stuart Royal arms with the addition of the etcutcheon of Nassau (Azure billetty or, a lion rampant of the last armed and langued gules). Received with the information that it was formerly displayed over the gate at Deptford Dockyard, though it appears more likely to be an interior piece never exposed to weather. The image here (D2285) showing the unicorn's chain of individually carved wooden links across its flank was taken before this was broken off and stolen when the arms were on display at the entrance to the former NMM gallery on 'Discovery and Seapower, 1450-1700' (opened in 1984) [PvdM 3/12].
