War service plaque

Bronze war service plaque for 'Capetown Castle'. The central panel has a border cast in relief with sea birds, a trident and at the base, breaking waves and two dolphins supporting a compass rose. There are two roundels at the top, one containing an enamelled Union Castle house flag, inscribed: 'UNION CASTLE'; the other, an anchor on a red background, within a wreath surmounted by a naval crown. The plaque has bolts and screws for attachment. Engraved inscription: '1939-1945', ' IN COMMEMORATION OF THE WAR SERVICES OF THIS GOOD SHIP AND THE DEVOTION TO DUTY OF THOSE WHO SERVED IN HER. 1939. RESCUED 19 SURVIVORS OF TORPEDOES S.S. "CLAN CHISHOLM" FROM NORTH ATLANTIC. 1940. 5TH FEBRUARY. REQUISITION BY H.M. GOVERNMENT FOR WAR SERVICE AS A TRANSPORT, AND REMAINED CONTINUOUSLY IN GOVERNMENT SERVICE THROUGHOUT THE WAR. OCTOBER. ATTACKED AND BOMBED BY ENEMY AIRCRAFT OFF NORTHERN IRELAND, BUT WITH ONLY MINOR CASUALTIES. 1942. AUGUST. RESCUED CREW OF TORPEDOED S.S. MALDANADO [Maldonado] IN NEIGHBOURHOOD OF BERMUDA. 1943 / 1946 CONTINUED UNDER REQUISITION TO H.M. GOVERNMENT AND DURING THAT PERIOD MADE TROOPING VOYAGES TO AFRICAN, INDIAN, AMERICAN AND ITALIAN PORTS. 1947. 8TH JANUARY. RETURNED TO PEACETIME DUTIES AFTER 484, 000 MILES ON WARTIME SERVICE DURING WHICH 164, 000 TROOPS AND GOVERNMENT PASSENGERS WERE CARRIED.'
