Engraved on the reverse: 'Crest: On a wreath or and azure, a leopard's head erased, argent palletée, gorged with a collar sable, edged or, charged with 3 pellets or, there from a rope reflexed, at each end a ring or. Shield: Azure, a chevron engrailed between 3 lions passant guardant, or. Motto: 'Forward' or, on a riband azure. Crest and shield registered at Heralds College 1591 by Cooke, Clarenceux King of Arms, to Thomas Smythe also Smith and Smithe of Westhanger, Kent. William Sidney Smith, born 1799 Sept 17, inherited these insignia armorial. Captain Royal Navy 1837. Married Amelia Sophia Giles. Presented this plate to his issue. Sophia Smith born 1837 April 20. William Smith born 1838 August 4. Constance Smith born 1841 June 29.'
