Pendant
Disc-shaped, mother-of-pearl pendant pierced for suspension. The front is engraved with a female figure representing Hope leaning on an anchor and a departing warship in the background. The back of the pendant is decorated with two overlapping hearts and bears the inscription ‘Though Far Apart near an [sic] Heart HMJ’. The back of the pendant is also decorated around the edges with a pique-point design. The exchange of gifts was a significant part of 18th-century courtship.
