Mourning Ring
Gold mourning ring commemorating John Malcolm Stevens (died 1817). White enamel is applied around the bezel of the ring inscribed onto which and executed in gold are the words 'SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF ' and 'OB 8 JULY 1817 AET 20'. There is a lock of plaited fair hair contained under glass within the bezel. The bezel is also decorated with a black enamel border and inscribed behind the bezel and round the inside of the ring are the words 'In memory of John Malcolm Stevens 2 mate who on heaveing (sic) the log was knocked overboard by the Spanker Boom of the Ship Lord Cranstoun' and 'Jamaica to-Lat 46 10N Long 30W'.
